Question re: loading line onto reel.

Postby jesseb05 » Wed Oct 19, 2011 9:49 am

Hi

Yesterday i purchased a Sedona 2500FD reel from BCF.
The information about what qty of different sized lines the reel can hold is as follows: lb (yds) 6(200) 8(140) 10(120)

Here's where my confusion sets in :) The rep at BCF recommended I purchase some Braided 8lb (150m) 0.8 line which I did. He then said that the line wouldn't be long enough and suggested I use some Mono 12lb (70m) 0.285mm to load on the reel first.

8lb (150m) would fill my reel according to the stats I've provided. Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance

Yep, the information on the box refers to monofilament line. For it's breaking strain, braid is always much thinner that mono. He's right, you'll need some backing.

Thanks for the quick reply scater.
To your knowledge is there a ratio of mono I should use to braid or should I just use enough mono to top up the reel to capacity?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to this.

Just enough mono.

It not only saves a bit of money in filling a reel compared to just braid, but also mono has more grip on the spool.

The easiest way to get it exactly right is a bit of a stuff around but it works. Load the braid on first, then tie a double uni to the mono, wind the mono on until the spool is full. Cut the mono and tie to some form of line holding receptacle (another reel, empty handline) wind on to the line holding thingy, then wind it onto another line holding thingy then back to the reel that you actually want the line on. The mono will end up on the bottom and you’ll have the perfect length and spool fill.

Otherwise it’s all a guesstimation as to how much backing to put on.

Personally I fill the spool all the way with braid as I’m too lazy to stuff around with backing.
Cheers,

Jon

Where with mono I used to fill the spool to the lip, with braid I always stop 2-3mm from the lip of the spool. Find I get less wind knots. Doesn't seem affect casting distance either.

Yes agree, I learned that when I switched from using mono to Fireline
