DIY Stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else

oops

Postby jayman » Fri Oct 07, 2011 2:04 pm

I had a bit of a hiccup while making my latest rod and was wondering if someone can help me fix it. heres the problem while putting the handle together in my haste I forgot the winding checks that go between the "split" part of a split grip and i didnt notice till just now (24 hours later) Is there anyway i can fix this without taking the whole lot apart. I should also mention this is for a mate who is paying for the rod so i want it to be perfect. I was thinking maybe a wrap on either end where the winding checks should be would make it look finished? also if i do have to take it apart how do i do that? i have also done a cross wrap above the fore grip would i have to take that off also?
thanks in advance.

some makers prefer wraps as opposed to winding checks anyway for weight saving reaosn as well as aesthetics
if the grips are glued on (and you've glued them on properly - as I hope you have) then they will not come off without ruining at least the grips and potentially the blank as well

either way as it stands, there will be no winding check in between
maybe a nice weave, cross wrap, lettering or inlay (abalone or snake skin) instead?
but just a small butt wrap at each end is perfectly acceptable, and when well done looks good too
especially if your blank is a nice shiny one and your epoxy work is good

how good a friend is he?
will he kick up that you forgot them?

Ok,

Here's the thing. Once that shit is glued up you've got to destroy any cork or EVA fittings to get them apart. So, it's better to find another way unless you want to buy a new handle kit. At this stage I'll tell you I've done both more than once. Forgetting the winding check is one of my specialties.

HOWEVER there are other ways around this. Firstly, give up all thoughts of putting that nice alloy Matagi check on it; that's not going to happen. Assuming you need to hide some sort of imperfections where the cork finishes and the thread starts there's a couple of options I would use.

1. Get a rubber winding check, or similar type of thing, perhaps an O-ring. Cut one side so you can open it and put it over the rod where the check would go. It needs to be a good fit but needs to be able to close back together, not stretched so the ends don't meet. Glue this in place as neatly as possible with some 5 min Araldite or whatever you have that will hold it neatly and uniformly in place. I normally apply it with a split match or something fine, you only need a little bit. It's really only got to hold it until the next step. Maybe something a little bit neater than Araldite but beware, most solvent based glues will melt the rubber.

2. Once it's firmly in place and the glue has gone off, put a coat of epoxy over the new winding check to seal it in place and sort of "bridge" the check and thread all together.

3. Get artistic now. Once the epoxy has set, you can wind a nice metallic thread up and over it. Or you could marble it. Or if you've been ultra-neat with your slice-and-join you could leave it, but that doesn't sound challenging enough to me and it's pretty unlikely you'll be happy with the result.

4. Epoxy the whole lot when you are coating your thread art.

5. send Gra 1 x Carton-O-Tasty piss.

ok thanks for tips guys i'll get creative and post up pics of the results. I'll try doing a wrap of some sort as i dont really want to destroy the whole handle.it's a nice shiny green/black blank and im using a green/purple thread combo which looks pretty good so far. gra what type of piss do you like ( i hear not cats  ) i'll bring some around and you can teach me a thing or two. he is a good mate but to be honest i dont reckon he will even notice that they are not there my brother didnt notice when i showed him. i'm off to the shed to give it a shot many thanks again.
