Jamie's first home made rod

Postby Decay » Wed Oct 28, 2009 9:04 am

Hi Everybody,

A few weeks ago I took Jamie Mattick for his first kayak fishing trip viewtopic.php?f=17&t=32345
When we got home to clean up he saw I had some rod building gear and said he was building a rod for a school project so I offered to help out.

Jamie started with a Samurai s007 carbon fibre blank (7 ft 2-4 kg 2 piece). I showed him how to do the binding and did one runner for him, he completed the rest. Together we lacquered the bindings, put the butt and holder in place and after about 2 weeks work he has a very nice home made rod!

I reckon this will be a lethal weapon when used with soft plastics  Hopefully a posting regarding the first catch will appear soon ;-)

Nice work, you might find the butt to be too long for chucking plastics all day, But as a snapper rod it looks pretty nice.
Cheers Bilby.

Thanks guys, Jamie seems real happy with it, must admit, I was tempted to "loose it" when I put on some finishing touches, I think it would be perfect in the yak.

The way I took the photo the butt looks really long but it's not. I bit longer than a berkley drop shot but not as long as my snapper rod. I think it will be a decent all rounder, it sure is light, the blank was very light and the runners didn't add much weight.

Yeh, I wish my teaches set projects like that.

Now Jamie needs to write up his project and then save up for a reel and put it to practice!

Nice job, having built several rods myself I know just how special the end result can be. Yes, the work is sometimes difficult and yes, it takes time, but what better feeling than catching a great fish off a home made rod. 8) :D
