Can I cut a Rod?

Postby hollgi » Tue Nov 04, 2008 9:36 am

I´ve got a 6-8kg spinn rod I really like.
The only thing is that the butsection is very long, and sometimes it´s hard to get it out of the holders.
Can I just cut 50-100mm of?
What with? A hacksaw with metall blade?
How can I get a Nice finish at the end??
Thanks

yep. no dramas. there should be a butt cap at the end? if so take this off (it may be glued on), then cut the grip where you want the butt to finish and glue the butt cap back on (you may have to shave some of the grip away to get it to fit nicely.)

I did this with an 8" silstar crystal tip snapper rod. Its now 7'2" and gets a hell of a lot more use

the other method to shorte the rod is to wrap the line around the tip just before you hook a fish

Hope this makes you feel better, my dog some how managed to get his foot between the rod and reel, i mush have turned my back for 2 min then amazingly my black dimond flats ranger 3-6 kg was now more 6-10kg missing the rod to the second guide. Heaps better for 3/4 jig heads now. I cried at the time and the kids still talk about how angry dad was with his best mate. :?

Alright- its done!
I mean i am very good with my hands- but I think I just needed some encouragement to hacksaw a couple of hundred dollars.
Happy now- you wouldn´t know if you see the rod.!!

I've got several rods I want to do this to, for some reason most heavier rods come with buts much longer than I want. Hearing someone has successfully done it I will give it a go on one of the cheaper rods I want to shorten.

Thanks for this thread :)
I am a wee small lass and have many rods that feel like cannons in my arms. Not for much longer
