Kayak Sailor on RTM Key Largo

Postby nickdec » Wed May 16, 2012 6:44 pm

I thought about doing this myself for a long time until I saw this set up and had to have it. The Genoa Jib is an extra, but helps the reach.

Sails well into the wind, in light winds in needs some help with the paddles but quite light work compared to no sail.
Leeboards can be lifted up from the water.

As you can see the Key Largo is well loaded :).

Mast folds down out of the way when you need to drift or anchor.

Recommended for less than 15 kts, but I was out in the 24kts, gusting to 30kt on Sunday afternoon - it was moving!

Only trolled up a tailor, couple of small squire and about 10 grinners :( on lures so far!

It is removed by undoing the 2 straps on the rear and the cord at the front.

Installation just requires 2 cleats at the rear and 2 at the front once you are happy where it will be.

An incredibly well thought out piece of gear.

Delivery - about 4 days to from the US on priority post.

Cheers,
Nick

Nice neat little setup. How far does she heel on a close reach? Do you have to brace much or is shifting your weight enough?
Water lapping against the hull, warm gentle breeze, fish straining on the line... how much sick leave do I have?

The Key Largo is very stable, and I just need to lean (keeping an eye out for the wind "darkies"on the water). I know of another Kayaker who is using some outriggers with the 1.6 sq m sail to prevent any unplanned swims. My preference is to have the paddle out helping when necessary.

There is YouTube footage from the manufacturers sailing quite strong wind and one of them goes over and recovers it, they are using tourers, not fishers.

Apologies for the late reply - took a while for my fingers to defrost from the weekend.

Nice sail Nick. I've got the 1.4 sq m sail with jib on my Viking ProFish. I've gone with RailBlaza mounting option so I can mount the whole sail onto the yak in 10 sec flat. The shipping time from the US is amazing on these sails. Absolutely love these sails and simply the best I have seen on the market for kayaks and canoes.

Cheers,
Anthony
