Smart arse bloody IT techo's ;-). Thanks heaps Greg. :D
Two triangles with a top edge 60cm, vertical edge 130cm, not sure of third edge (but that shouldn't matter), equals .78 sq metre or there abouts using my dodgey maths????? Come on surely someone can tell me the answer. :?

According to my crayons, .78sqm is correct.
At least I remember how to paddle, just need to work out how to fish.

Paul, I wanna see a piccy of you at the sewing machine mate.....don't be getting that lovely wife of yours to bail you out again

How much does that thingo weigh? I'd say you want it light as possible. Might be worth taking off one of the arms and the centre hub thing so you just having a mast and single arm pivoting at the bottom as a boom. The material should stop the boom dropping too low. Also see if you can secure the bottom of the rod holder to something as most of the force from the mast will try and move the bottom of the rod holder which isn't attached to anything and might rip out the holding bolts. Thinking a bit more about it, the forces might be fairly small so you could give it a try and if it breaks try strengthening it

You also said you had an old tarp lying around, you could use that as sail material as a temporary sail, plenty of boats out there using the old blue tarps sewn up into sails.

Flump
Being made of aluminium tubing this thing is surprisingly light, yet it's extremely strong if supported with some sort of bracing The wire stretched across the top, sail material, two ropes, and some additional in hull support for the pole should do the job OK. This was an outdoor umbrella, and I had it up permanently for a year in all conditions without any drama until the material rotted, so it's up to the task I reckon.

At .78 sqm (if that is correct) it shouldn't present too many problems I hope.Says he with fingers crossed.More later.

Blast from the past....kinda...

Crazy Clarks has market umbrella's for $25 I think...pretty much like Occy's setup..
I'll take a gander tomorrow, looks like a great and cheap idea for a solid base to start from.

Hmm I wonder if I could somehow set up two sails. CMYKOC barque Cavendish has a nice ring to it don't ya reckon.

I don't know exactly what this says about me but I'm in heaven when I find a new discount variety shop such as Crazy Clarkes, The Warehouse, Clints Crazy Bargains, The Reject Shop, or Go Lo. ;-)

Hey Occy,

I was browsing through the sailing section and I found your post, It looks good there mate I don't see how it couldn't work either.

I remember when I used to sail I green rowing dorry with a large beach umbrella... That used to be heaps of fun! But it only seemed to work going down wind.

Have a blast...

I have made some modifications recently as it was too hard to deploy and take down. Removed the centre pole, kept the two side stays, then connected them at the bottom with some tubing threaded with shock cord. The whole thing is attached to the deck just forward of the cockpit with the shock cord. I have two more shock cords which cross over themselves running forward, along with two ropes running aft where they are attached to the side of the cockpit. It's a breeze deploying and folding it now, simply pull/release the ropes and I'm in business. Surprisingly Cavendish seems to handle it quite well, no doubt helped by all that extra weight courtesy of my incessant urge to pimp and add things, along with his rather pronounced keel.In a strong following breeze he gets up to around 6kph, and by varying the angle of the sail and using my rudder have found I can sail reasonably well across the breeze as well. It's all good.

Hi all,

Isn't the meaning of life 42?

or was that 39 or 47.
I would work it out more or less, as if its a bit more than a metre in one direction, and a bit less the other..... No thats not right. Get some A4 paper, and work out the area per sheet, and work out how many bits to make up 1.2 metres, and drop them on the floor in the shape of the sail you want, and there it is.

Strewth! I think I have cracked the code!
