Hiking tent

Postby Cammers » Sun Mar 13, 2011 7:35 pm

Hi all,

I am looking at a hiking style tent for the possibility of some kayak camping during the warmer months. I have spotted a few that have caught my eye:

Black wolf stealth mesh: http://blackwolf.com.au/adventure1000078/stealth-mesh/

Darche hybrid: http://www.darche.com.au/tents/hybrid.html

DMH huon: http://www.wildearth.com.au/huon-person ... p-268.html

Does anyone have any experience with any of these? At the moment I am leaning towards the darche, purely because of the low weight and cost (around $100). Anyone want to talk me out of it??

http://www.wellingtonsurplus.com.au/sho ... ERSON+TENT

I bought one of these off ebay about 18 months ago and it is a dead set ripper.

No loops or tubes to much around with, just quick fix external plastic clips meaning the whole tent is erected in less than two minutes including the fly.

For a 1 man tent it has plenty of room for a second plus the clothes bags etc.

I think I paid about 120 delivered fro my tent.
No point being a tight arse when shitting is the objective.

I got one of the black wolf ones from Anaconda for $79 a couple of years ago. It truly is a fantastic tent! Packs up TINY as well. I bought it to look at extended yak trips, and although I haven't done one yet, I've used the tent a few times.

I came across quite a few interesting tent reviews on YouTube, which I find great, as you can actually 'see' the tent, as opposed to looking at a picture...

This one looks good to me:

There are plenty more to check out too...

Cheers,

Mike.

Pretty much, bang for your buck, Black wolf is the way to do it.

If you want to knock a bunch off retail buy from here.

I bought the blackwolf expedition as a snow tent. It's held up shitloads better than both a vango and a macpac in terms of wear and tear.

i have the blackwolf and its a great little tent doesnt take up to much room in the front hatch of the kayak and has always served me well my only gripe is a small one but it does kind of bug me. the poles have to be fed through the material of the tent when setting up. in my opinion this system is outdated and too time consuming i think the insect mesh section of the tent should simply clip onto the poles with quick release clips and hang below. no big deal really and i still think its a great tent for the dollars

The blackwolf stealth mesh is a great little tent for the money. We sell them at the camping store I work at and havent had any back that I know of. I do agree with the slide through section for the poles it is a bit of a pain, clips would be better, but hey....it only costs you 30 seconds and its pretty cheap at under 100 bucks. :D

For some reason I think mine has clips on it rather than threading the poles through.... I'd have to pull it out to check, but I could've sworn it did....

When I find it one of the 472,000 boxes in the house (Ahhhh the joys of moving!) I'll rip it out and check for you.

I bought a Caribee Super 2 hiking tent for a bushwalk last year. It was only around $50 and I didn't know how it would go, but I have been very happy with it. It's not an extreme weather 4 season tent, but believe me, I'm not going kayak camping in extreme polar weather. If I only get a few years out of it I won't be disappointed.

Here's a site that sells them online:

Water lapping against the hull, warm gentle breeze, fish straining on the line... how much sick leave do I have?

Can't speak for Darche tent, but I have owned a Darche Swag since 1994, and have found the brand extremely reliable and they make a solid product, if their tents have the same reputation as their swags your getting a top bit of gear. Big fan of anything Darche.

I'm in the market for a good quality tent too, and have been looking around. It's worth having a look on eBay, there are lots of tents for sale. Plenty 'unused, still in packaging'...you can ask the seller a question, so if you find one you're interested in, you could ask them why they're selling a tent they've never used. This is a good time of year for quietly flogging unwanted christmas presents though, so that probably explains a lot.

There are some quality tents on offer, some good buys, some so close to the shop price it doesn't matter; a lot of people on eBay are dreaming. :D I trawled through pages and pages, and just bookmarked the ones that looked like good buys for further attention. Some of the tents you're looking at may be available a bit cheaper through eBay, with any luck.

The Fishin' Musician knows a few things about tents, having recently taken the plunge himself, but I've already given the poor sod a bashing seeking information I hadn't found for myself, and he's been incredibly patient with me. I'll get back to you with some of the links he sent me.

This is on eBay: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Denali-Kakad ... 2eb59dc8e9 Ends tomorrow though, you need to watch it if you want it.

This one has a good buy it now price, and plenty of time left, but may be a little heavy for your purposes. Plenty of interior space though. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Denali-Kakad ... 2eb59dc8e9

Fishin' Musician sent me this link, looks like a good shape and lots of space: http://cascadedesigns.com/msr/tents/exp ... er/product

And this: http://lightweighttramping.blogspot.com ... -tarp.html If you're into ultra-light camping, and don't mind the mossies...

Or just trawl through this lot and see if you can find anything suitable: http://shop.ebay.com.au/i.html?_nkw=hik ... m270.l1313

Also in the market but holding off until I have time to use the thing. Anaconda have 40% off their denali range at present and nearly bought one on impulse last night but figure there are better options so still watching threads like this. Have also hassled tfm about this (I think), he doesn't mind, everyone should hassle him.

If common sense was common, there would be more of it!
