I have a cable lock that either locks on to the car, on to my other yak or around a post, tree etc.
The lock threads through the scuppers.

+3 cable lock to (locked) roof racks.
If your racks can't be locked, find something else - a mag wheel on your 4x4, a tree.

I usually camp with other men

so during the day the bad language , smell of farts and arse crack usually keep others not in the group away.

At night sounds like a plainlands in the middle of Africa mixed with a wood chopping expo with the noises coming from the camp

I've never thought to lock up my yak until I read this, I suppose if I had to a lump of chain & a padlock would suffice. As above we're usually roaring, snorting & farting around the fire so it tends to keep most folks away.

x4. A bike lock through a scupper on both the front and rear rack. I live in an apartment complex and use the same 2 bike locks linked together to wrap around a post in the shared garage. No reason that couldn't be done around a tree in the bush.

I was recently in the same predicament when away from home with the family. I just left the kayak loaded and locked to the top of my ute with a length of chain through the scuppers.

I asked one of the employees where we were staying if it whether I could just leave stuff in the back of my ute unlocked and they replied that a 12v fridge went missing once. There were boats with motors and fishing gear left up on the beach every night and I didn't hear anyone complain about theft so I wondered whether I was just more un-trusting than the rest.

When in SWR recently a bloke we knew who was staying in a carvan park at Jerseyville (not far from there) had around $2,500 worth of fishing gear disappear from his annexe whilst he was out shopping. Apparently it's not all that uncommon up that way (and to be truthful up and down the entire east coast), and boating/kayaking and fishing gear is particularly vunerable.

Best way to secure a yak IMHO is a long Masterlock cable with a quality padlock through the scuppers if you have them. I can't do that with the Phoenix (only one scupper on the hull which is plumbed to three above) so use Kanulock lockable tie down straps at the taper on either end (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SPT-Lockable ... 2306wt_966). I'm not sure how good they actually are or if you could somehow wiggle the yak out of them, but at the moment it's the only thing I can think of. I use them to secure the yak to my roof racks when travelling also, so they are super convenient.

But the pet crocodile in the front hatch usually deters the most adventurous thief.
