Postby 4kidz2feed » Sun Feb 07, 2010 7:55 pm

Hi
I am very new to Kayaking but would Love to try a camping/fishing trip down the Glenelg River from Dartmoor to Nelson, Has Anyone done it?
This may sound like a dumb question but after you get to Nelson how do you guys get back to your car at Dartmoor?
Thanks

This is a trip i've been wanting to do for a while myself, nice long flat paddle, camping spots everywhere & a chance of Mulloway.
I seem to remember reading something about being able to bus back up to dartmoor to get your car, (maybe run by nelson canoe hire or something??)
Could be totally wrong too :?
Cheers,
Mark

Nelson Boat and Canoe Hire say on their website that they will deliver or pick up paddlers from any accessible place on the river as part of their hire packages so may be worth a call to see if they would do transport for others.

We have been thinking about basing ourselves at Nelson then doing overnighters with one of three kids at a time.

It's been a long time since I visited (almost 20 years) and a highlight of the trip was snorkelling from Ewens Ponds the 8km to the sea. If it's still allowed then well worth doing.

The ponds are still a goer' and well worth it. Well as of a couple of years back snyway! I think it's rated as one of the clearest places to snorkel in OZ, if not the world! The Mt Gambier region is full of those funky water holes. Go and check out the big freshwater crays.

You may want to check with Mt Gambier Parks office re the ponds, I believe the water level has dropped severely and there was talk of closing them. A lot of the weed had also been said to have died off. Absolute shame if it has, I dont know anywhere else you can lay in 10 meters of water and still count the stars.
