The May TAS AKFF Bash

Postby Blaen » Tue Apr 22, 2008 6:26 pm

Okay folks,

The trip for the first weekend in May is open to a couple of options, please see below for the explanation:

Option 1
Date - Saturday the 3rd of May
Time - On the water by TBA
Launch Point - Meadowbank Dam (exact point TBC)
Target Species - Trout, Atlantic Salmon.

Special notice - for Trout you will need a Fishing Licence, no licence means no fishing for Trout basically.

Option 2
Date - Saturday the 3rd of May, or potentially Friday the 2nd.
Time - 1:00 pm (10:00 am if on the Friday)
Launch Point - Boat Ramp at the old Bridge, Midway Point causeway. (fishing around Woody Island and the small reef there)
Target Species - Flathead, Trumpeter, Aussie Salmon, Couta, Elephant Fish and Gummy Shark.

Special notice - this is a Shark Nursery, all sharks must be released as soon as possible and in good health. Mainly Gummy Shark found in here, though I have confirmed that someone did catch a small Mako about 90 cm long off of the bridge recently.

Why 2 options? I can't make it to Meadowbank as my son has started playing Soccer at school and I want to be there for him and cheer him on in every game. At five years old, I think he needs to have me there encouraging him along all the way. So that's why I am going for the 2 options, I can't make it to Meadowbank, however I will endeavour to get to the Midway Point causeway by 1:00 to go out and try a new spot.

I am not saying that we should all go to one and not the other, as I reckon you should get up there and get amongst the Trout and Salmonoids. Just that I can't make it to Meadowbank and am offering an alternative for just an afternoon trip. I intend to hit the water at about1:00 and be off again by 4:00. In doing this I may also decide to take a Flex day on the Friday so I can get a full day in somewhere and the Saturday afternoon could go by the wayside.

And now for a question: Do Elephant Fish need to be bleed after capture?

Please note - Read the Warning above in Red and Pink.
Cheers
John

Unfortunately not mate, the missus is having a stall at a local market so I will be babysitting most of Sunday.

Saturday afternoon or Friday are my days for fishing by the looks of things. Either way it looks like being saltwater. and relatively close to home.

Thanks for the PM "heads-up" on this one Blaen, I have been watching the trip section. My forays across the border wall at Oatlands will probably be a bit limited, and I don't think this trip is on for me. I am keen to meet up with as many of you blokes as I can, and will watch for opportunities that I can make.

I just realised that I can't make it either, I'll be working at Agfest that weekend. :(

We could always break with tradition and make it the second weekend of the month..... ;-)

Medowbank is one of the lakes that is open all year round, so no need to rush up there. Its a good mid winter option as its a fair bit warmer than the highlands and even the west.[great lake and burbury] So even though the prime waters are locked up[places like Woods need it by the sounds of things] its not like you cant chase Trout all year round.

Dont the Brown Trout waters close this sunday?

I dont mind either way, I can take or leave Trout fishin, with my track record Im just there to have a laugh and enjoy the countryside 8)

I'll fish both weekends with those that can only make one of them.

Cheers

Yeah right the trout season ends on Sunday, what was I thinkin!! Maybe I was thinking rainbow trout waters??? Well in any case, I love being on the kayak with snow falling on the water, and if I don't keep fishing through winter my life will cave in all around me, because of all the other crap going on I need to get out there (okay a bit dramatic - please don't ask questions!!) Anyway, meadowbank, great lake, burbery etc, all places that I don't spend much time at. All nice places to go on a clear winters day no matter if the fish are on or not. And the car heater works fine. I intend fishing just as much over winter than I have done during the season. To Robb, winter bream is a good option, not that I have done much of that. I don't bother fishing in the Derwent, as I like to eat what I catch. Having said that, I think alot of enjoyment can be had bream fishing the Derwent, so I reckon I might have to get into that a bit more.

I made a post recently about a trip to Lake Skinner last weekend. I took some fantastic photo's and I have them on the kodak gallery. If you would like to view them, send me a PM with your email address and I would be happy to share them with you. Believe it or not I took 300 photographs that day, and I have 46 of them in this gallery. It was such a magnificant place. Three of us went there, two fly fishing and me spinning. Only two fish landed, the water was crystal and the fish were spooky - you could see them feeding and cruising. Awesome.

I maybe still keen to fish meadowbank this sunday if anybody takes the lead and makes a decision that there is a trip planned, please let me know.

Cheers, James
