Tas: ANZAC Weekend Plans?

Gday all,

What are your plans for the longweekend coming up? I thought we might be able to organize an overnighter somewhere or even a daytrip.

Ive been thinking about heading up to the lakes, camping, but not sure yet...will keep an eye on the weather and see how it goes. Options are to go annoy the Clarence Anglers club over at Woods Lake, im a former member and have been thinking about joining up again. Also gives me the chance to go annoy the fellas from SFT who are having a GTG over at Great lake[ I know of at least 1 yakker in each group].

The other option is to head up the east coast and chase some Stripped tuna, they are getting them in close, should be fun in the yaks, good size Aussie Salmon and chance of a Kingy. Im thinking around StHelens or maybe a bit further south.

And for a 3rd option I was thinking about Dover, its got all your bread n butter species with a better than average chance of nice oven sized Atlantic Salmon, Ive only fished it once out of a boat and we did ok fishing the old oyster leases through the esperance narrows, its perfect yak water, we spooked alot of Atlantics with the boat in the shallows.

Considering I lost my trout/bream combo down the Huon I would be limited to the flyrod if I went up top, I dont eat Trout, its just for the company and countryside up there. So I am leaning towards a saltwater trip[got a couple of heavier glass rods], Im open to other suggestions of course, Fortescue bay is in the back of my mind, i just need to find out how much the park and camp fees are there now....not sure if its worth it :?

Anyway, post your plans and lets see if we can arrange something :D

Cheers

I have been knee capped for the main part of the weekend....

My son's school fair is on Saturday and I am helping out there, I also need to help out with the set up on Friday. :(

Sunday is a possibility, however I was thinking of staying local and trying out around Woody Island out from the Sorrel Causeways. A mate has been catching Flathead to 50 cm out around there recently and stink boaters avoid the place as a rule, being a shark sancutary.
Cheers

G'day Dan, good to hear from you,

As you mentioned the SFT boys are having the g2g up there and im booked for that trip 8) :)
But it would be shore nice to have some yakkers for company though!
Dont worry about the bream / trout setup Dan, one of the SFT blokes will surely have on spare, you'd think so anyway..... :?

Friday im free though, if anyones keen for a shore bash somewhere. The yaks will be packed and ready to roll on Friday though.

Thanks

Gday mate,

Ahh yeah I remember you talking about Pittwater, Im easy, If sunday is the day you can get out then I reckon I'll join ya. So many options, Ive been thinking about trying off spec island down at Dodges, theres also a reef/rock just out in the bay a bit, we used to call it whale rock but not sure if thats the right name. Still got flatties there but with the reefs also a shot at something else....whale rock has kingfish written all over it :D [you can just see it on google earth]

Well theres sunday taken care of!.....I might just make each day a local-ish daytrip, so if theres anyone who cant make sunday, we can still arrange a trip somewhere else. Its easier for me to work around you lot with kids and non fishing partners ;-)

Hey Robb,

Good luck for the weekend mate, take ya warmest clothes wont ya :o :D And take care, if ya go in it wont be pretty, shes cold water up there so chuck some dry clothes and a towl in the front hatch, if you do end up with a wet arse you will want to get dry clothes on asap. Stick with your old man, coldwater shock is real and can happen to old/young...fit/fat, so ya want to be there for each other. With that leccy of yours it might pay to tether yourself to the yak[old bodyboard leash or something] You dont want to get seperated from your yak, swimming after it isnt a great option...the cold water will stop you in your tracks. Make sure your oldman's paddle is tethered too and tell him to not let the bugger go :o

Shorebashing!!?....whats that?   nah Im well and truly spoilt now mate....nothing compares to yak fishing, just not interested in boats or shorebashing anymore ;-)

Heres a tip for ya, Men+beer=squid rings...............Men+too many lures+beer+need for squid rings=Opportunity for an enterprising young squid whisperer

I think the general idea with waders is if you wear a good tight belt over them, then they are fine. And ya PFD of course but that goes without saying eh! The belt thats on your waders will be fine, just do your PFD nice and tight over the top as well.
If you spend enough time in the water it will slowly leak in but with the belt the water wont gush in and drag you to the bottom like some will tell you. Allthough fast flowing water and waders with no belt could lead to trouble, just common sense really.

I wish I could help ya with the fishing but Ive only fished it the once from the shore[donut] and with my track record with Trout you dont want my advice anyway   Ya have some gun Trout anglers up there, just do what they are doing[minus the 100kph bit...]

Hope ya nail a Shark!!

Guys, I am working that weekend and hopefully at this stage will have a lash for some scallops of the island on friday. Is the first weeknd of the month going to be an organised trip this month? If so I will get the weekend off. Dan, I have got some spare spin rods if you want to borrow one or two.

Yeah I hope the monthly paddle is still going ahead, I'll leave that to John.

This one was just to make use of the long weekend, in case someone was looking for a paddle buddy.

The monthly annual trip eh Robb   I'll send that line to your english teacher :P :P

I would probably be keen for at least one day trip this weekend. I like the idea of Esperence river and down that way, lots of options. If any solid plans are made I will arrange some child minding and thro my hat in the ring.

My preferences would be Esperence / Lune / Huon area, Meadowbank, upper derwent / New Norfolk (within 1-1.5 hrs of city)

I'm Keen for something this weekend but I'm thinking troutish as it is seasons end and all, Maybe a bit higher than last time on Huon as there may be some fish starting a spawn run up through the rapids? (I headed out to the lower Arve river last weekend and for the first time saw trout jumping up waterfalls so there are definitely some fish runs happening) otherwise maybe the lune of esperence as I'm sure they'll be worth a look.

Mate, Meadowbank sounds good to me. I am keen for some Atlantic action if possible. Something trouty would be good at any rate.
