Where to next?

Postby Blaen » Thu Mar 06, 2008 6:12 pm

OKay guys we have had a number of suggestions, so time to vote:

Where to next for the Tassie Boyz?

The the next question will be when? My suggestion is a Saturday or Sunday that fits in with the on-line competition, so either the first or second weekend of the month.
Cheers
John

John, as far as the freshwater options are concerned, I think a trout venture sooner rather than later before the season ends (not long to go) - I am even considering doing an overnighter this Sunday up at Arthurs lake (Monday is a public hol). Any weekend is good mate, I can get away with a couple of days notice. John, & anyone local reading this let me know if you are keen to camp up at Arthurs this Sunday night, heading up lunchtime Sunday for an evening and morning session, depending on the action, come back Monday arvo, I can fit one other kayak on my roofracks. If Wiseguy or deepsouth haven't got their rig together they are welcome to come and fish off the shore and take the yak out when not being used etc.

If nobody is keen, I will stay more local and may do a Huon River trip on Sunday and maybe take the swag and head down to cockle creek for a look on Monday.

Also, John and other S/E Tas members, as soon as the squid turn up in numbers (anytime now apparenntly) a trip to Bruny is a must. Last trip there filled the esky (only took bag limit of course) and it lasted me months of calamari a few times per week. Perhaps Scott can tell us when the squid turn up. They are easy to catch at adventure bay and I am sure at other locations just as easy.

I am heading down to Pirates Bay on Sunday mate so I am hoping to be able to take the Yak down there for an hour or 2 on the water. But I would love to do Arturs at some stage.

I was going to go fly fishing on a river somewhere, but I think you've convinced me to go to Arthurs instead James. ;)

Were you thinking of camping at Jonah? I'm not sure whether I'll be camping at this stage or just coming early Monday morning.

Hey gents,

I voted for a spotted-slugathon down the Huon but I'd be just as happy to go to southport[probabbly stay overnight] Or any of the others for that matter, I agree with Jimmy though, might be worth chasing trout before the end of the season, not that theres any real shortage of places to chase them offseason.

For this weekend ive got no set plans, other than going out on sunday[28C forcast] and doing a few tests in the yak while its warm, you know, try to tip it over, get it back upright, climb on ect ect all stuff I havnt tried and want to before winter. Do it with an empty yak except the big crate I have on the back, I want to see how much drag that creates when flipping it back over.

I dont mind when either, whenever suits you mate[ kids gives ya priority vote!]

Righto. Can't camp at Arthurs on Sunday night but will be able to come up early in the morning on this Monday holiday. Baldy are you up for it too? Spotted slugs an all... ;)

All those other options in the poll sound great for the next trip too.

7 mile beach & Southport are both places I've never yakked so would be high on my list.

Can't beet the Huon guys, as a kid I would often spear some big sea running trout from the Kermandie River mouth. Follow the river up to Whale Point Road, pull the yaks over the wier and then paddle the short distance to the old O'Hallorans Road bridge (Not there any more). The big sea runners were only ever caught below the wier, but some reasonable freshies were caught above.

Haven't been fishin there for 20 years, but it sure was good back then.

I'm going for a paddle on sunday, not sure where or when yet though.

I'm thinking maybe somewhere down the channel, get some fish early then maybe trial the yak as a snorkelling platform and get myself some abalone.

Is it too early to start thinking about next summer and planning ourselves a weekend at Fortescue ?
At least I remember how to paddle, just need to work out how to fish.

Ok fellas it is 11 pm friday night, gotta plan something certain, since there is some interest I think I will go ahead and organise a Arthurs lake trip, it is only 2 hrs "door to lake". And if I end up going by myself that is fine, always catch a few but not quite as safe.

I will head up on Sunday lunchtime as suggested, probably stay around Jonah Bay or close by. Have a favourite camping spot but reckon it will be taken, being a long wekeend. If anybody has fished Woods Lake before, it is a cracker when it is fishing well, and even if it isn't fishing well, a nice place to pedal for a few hours so might give that a go too - out 30 minutes drive from Arthurs.

So I reckon I will head up there by 1 or 2 pm Sunday (or earlier if possible). As I said, I can fit one other Kayak on the car, and a couple of other blokes. It's a landcruiser so can fit a bit of stuff comfortably Let me know if you wanna come with me or if you intend meeting up there. Craig (Vertigrator) I will send PM with mobile, hopefully the new telstra NextG will work up there.

Cmon you blokes lets get stuck into it, those mainlanders are dominating this forum and we gotta post some trip reports on par with Paulo's marlin capture and other success stories!!!! ha ha

Arthur's sounds good, I wish I could make it but I can't change the family plans if I want to get out for next month's entry in the Viking Comp :D

I'll be down Pirates Bay way, so hopefully I will get an hour or two of Yak time in, I am taking it down there so I don't intend for it to just sit on the car

Good Luck at Arthurs guys, I reckon it will be worth still going down the Huon in early April as well, what do you think?

We could start planning for a big trip, with a wekend of camping some where, start coming up with ideas and we will get it rolling
Cheers

James my plan at the moment is to set the alarm for early and try to get at Arthurs at about 8 or 9 am on Monday. Then fish all day and head back late arvo. If you're in the Jonah area then I should be able to find you.

Cheers

Gday Craig, had a change of plan. Have been moving house and got far too much to do, and gotta look after my daughter this evening. So I reckon I might getaway for a few hours on Monday morning instead of going to Arthurs. Just too flat out and nobody else showed any interest. So will leave it until I have a whole weekend so I can make a decent trip out of it. Will probably go for a spin up the derwent and Tyenna river in the morning.
Good luck

Het fellas, only just recieved the pm then, I was over at Bruny with no internet ascess :)

Anyway, im keen to smash the Huon before the season ends, maybe even setup the tent somewhere and stay a couple nights. ( thats only if the old mans keen  )

As for this weekend, well I had a nice little trip over at Bruny. Fished the Adventure Bay creek and scored a couple little Bream on SPs. Good Fun.
Also got a huge feed of calamari, managed 8 in an 45min session, my bro and his mate also got 16 abalone and 2 crays...a feast set for a king!!!

Couple nice flatties came to hand as well.

This ones for you Baldy,

Empdied out the yak and took it for a surf up the North side of Adventurre Bay beach. Not a huge swell 1m - 1 half metres, still enuff for an unco to capsize 10 - 20 times!

Great fun though, but because the prowlers are so long once you turn them in the slightest they spin round, you loose control and next thing you know your wrestling your kayak under water   :o as some shocked asian tourist watch on in interest
Scary stuff but it's good fun when you get a succsesful boost in with a wave.

As I mentioned im up for a trout hammer, you name the date and I'll be there 8)

Bream - 41cm
Flatty - 44cm
Black Back - 58cm
Trout - 6lb - Don't know length

Next time your in the surf robb, as soon as you start to get turned side on to the wave, lean into it (ie out to sea) and use your paddle as an outrigger on the same side. It seems unnatural at first but it works. Nothing wrong with coming in sideways if you're still sitting on top.

Having said that, I haven't tried the surf in my Prowler yet, but it used to work a treat on my old wave ski.
At least I remember how to paddle, just need to work out how to fish.
