TAS - Oyster Cove to Kettering trip

Postby Blaen » Sat Feb 23, 2008 2:37 pm

Hello my fellow Taswegians,

Any interest in a trip from Oyster Cove down to Kettering and maybe to Peppermint Bay next Saturday (1st of March),

Launch from: Manuka Road, there is a small lay by on the water side of the dirt road, just past Molly's Cottage, or that could be Polly's Cottage. Anyway lots of Sea Kayakers launch from there.

Time: Planning on being on the water at about 7:00 am, probably returning to the launch point by 12:30'ish.

Targetting: Anything with scales, but the usual suspects will be about, Flathead, Aus Salmon, Atlantic Salmon, Couta, Flounder etc.

Please post here or PM me if you're interested?
Cheers
John

That sounds allright mate, count me in at this stage. That ramp just past kettering [in the next bay] would be ok for a launch if theres a NE blowin.

Heres hoping this fowl weather lets up a bit 8)

I'm in if I can get a leave pass and if the weather is better than today. ;)

I have no idea where you want to launch from. Maybe you could post a map pic from google-map or thelist with an x marks the spot. :?

Cheers

Not far off Baldy, just a little back from here in fact.

Here is my dodgy map, I have a light blue Suzuki Berlino Wagon which will be parked in the layby.

Dodgy Map

If it chockers there with cars, as it only take about 8 cars, we can head to where Baldy points out. I haven't driven down that part before, so I am not sure what's there.

This one shows what I have seen or caught in the bay:

This could turn out to be quite a fun trip 8)

Yeah mate Im looking forward to it, I'll even bring a spear for a crack at a flatfish or 2 :D

Its been a while since Ive launched from that spot past kettering[bout 15years] So I cant say whats there now, it used to be an ok little ramp, we used to launch a 17ft tinny there no probs[diving for sea urchins].

You won't need a spear mate the Foulnder in there can be taken on a line.

Not sure of the laws around spearing from a boat of any kind, I know wading with a light is okay, but not sure on the boat method. I must byuy myself a light on day and actually go Floundering it'd been at least 10 years since I have done it.

Ah you might be right there mate, Ive never heard about it though, we used to do alot of floundering down at Dodges ferry as teens, we used to wade but saw people out in small dingys. The only thing I know about spearing is its illegal to spear bream down here. I can see the reason for not allowing spearing out of a motorised boat, chewing up seagrass ect ect but I reckon it would be a hard nosed inspector to pull up a kayak for spearing the odd flounder.

This is all just speculation anyway, I havnt even tried using the spear while sitting in the yak, so it all might come to nothing

Cant hurt to clip it on the spare paddle holder, discourage wayward boaters maybe 8)

Sorry about the confusion.

I guess it will also be very weather dependent too :?

Just thought I would add if theres anyone who hasnt got a yak yet, or one of you guys that knows someone who might be keen, they are more than welcome to borrow my canoe/yak viewtopic.php?f=14&t=11552 Its nothing flash and I wouldnt go to sea in it but its more than good enough to plug around the bay and chase flatchaps and stuff.

Only problem is you would need to pick it up from Claremont, as I cant carry both on my little car.

Cheers
Baldy
