Roof mounting a kayak on a Hyundai Tiburon

Postby toeknee1969 » Mon Jul 09, 2012 9:32 am

Hello fellow yakers,

I have a Canyon Kayak (similar to the DayLite that they sell at BCF). I would like to find a way of roof mounting it to my Tiburon. I am thinking foam pads between the yak and the roof and then ratchet strap them down.

Ideally a roof rack would be more suitable but I am doing this on a budget.

Any help is appreciated.

I wouldn't ever NOT use a set of roof racks... you will do more than the $200-odd it costs to buy racks in damage to the roof of the car...

keep an eye on Super Cheap and BCF catalogues, and for the Tiburon you'll probably end up getting some racks around the $300 mark, as they are an odd fit, due to it being a coupe... if you dent the roof of your Tiburon, you'll be up for over a grand to fix it... just my thoughts :)

Yeah, soft racks, use them on the rio when carting the small yak when my tow car is being used for something else.
Get someone to help you when your working out where your going to put them, (As you might need to move the yak on and off a few times to make sure you have it all in the best spot) and make sure the strap for the front one is not going to impede your vision. Got mine from Anaconda for about $40 on special.

Toe, any reason you didn't fill In your location?

If you want to borrow some soft racks for a weekend send a pm. You are talking about building a DIY soft rack. Don't do it. Otoh soft racks are a solid solution if you cant manage proper ones. Which after ll are preferred. My soft racks have done something like 5000 km and have been fine.

I ended up getting a pair of SEAK soft roofracks from Anaconda for $42.00 and they are brilliant. Look really good on the Tiburon too.

Thats what mine are, about the same price I think to. They certainly worked well for me while I had a car without a tow bar.

I was in the same boat When I first got my kayak (being a thrifty student and all) I used the seak soft roof rack to pick it up, unfortunatally for me the roof racks broke (due to poor construction) luckily I was carrying some ratchet straps, which made it very secure. I got the seak roof racks replaced by annaconda, but it made me a little worried about using them. I since picked up a new set of roof racks on special from supercheap for 160 and it has definitely made it easy to transport.

I've got a very similar car - 1996 Hyundai Coupe.

I just purchased some second hand racks ($20) a piece of steel ($6) and then drilled them to my roof. Works a treat. Not sure if it's legal - haven't been booked yet. The yak stayed on solid going peak 130km/hr and for a 7 hour drive. I'll post picks when I get a chance
