[Help me on] perth, cockburn sound snapper

Postby nazone » Mon Apr 09, 2012 2:12 pm

Hi,

Ive had my hobie outfitter for a while taken it out a few time on the swan and canning river. Ive been really keen to get it out into the sound and catch some snapper!

I just want to ask what gear would i require?

rod weight class. I was thinking of getting a t-curve snapper for my next rod.

what size reel? i was thinking of maybe a sustain

what lb line? and leader

what lures? blades sofplastics?

what is the best time for snapper? am i too early for the season?

what are the conditions like out there? and closest launch.

i know its a handful of questions. but Ive hit the search button. and cant some seem to find exactly what im looking for. ANY input is greatly appreciated thank you

Heya Mate, lots of questions there!! Best bet would be to hook up with the local crew and get onboard with a trip!

But just as a general answer;

A good quality 4-6kg rod with a decent 2500-4000 size reel, with 10-15lb braid will do the job nicely. Really depends on how close to structure you plan on targetting them, leader of 20-30lb is plenty.

Plastics are a good starting point for artificials, and you cant beat Gulp 7" jerk Baits in Pink or Nuc chook. A deep diving hard body like a Halco Scorpion 125 is great for trolling between spots too.

Closest launch is Woodmans Point, but there are others that the locals may share with you as you get involved, conditions are generally easy going if you pick your days. The season is really on from June onwards, but there are resident fish there all year.

Hope this helps!

You could also check out Kalgrm's reports. He did pretty well in Cockburn sound. Might give you some tips. See memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4992 and search his posts using "Cockburn"
Also some specific advice here viewtopic.php?f=10&t=28048&p=296240&hilit=+cockburn#p296240
