I did it ... my last paddle for some time, albeit in a sea kayak, for 3 hours.
Goodbye sea, goodbye paddling, goodbye paddling for a few weeks. Don't catch all the fish you bastards!
It was blowing 12 - 15 knots. Strangely enough, at an 8.00 am arrival (2 hours late), there was a tndem kayak returning and landing as i was starting to set up. They were a husband and wife team, relatively local, and no idea of the large fish that sometimes are caught at Scarby/Redcliffe. They were, from what I could gather, largely fresh water fishos. I was able to share some info on what might be hooked here, and give them some advice on jigheads/line ratings/reels etc for the area. They were not wearing PFD's.
A short time later, another kayak fisho launched from Scarby beach. He is a forum member (though hasn't posted for some time). He also was not wearing a PFD. By any measure it was reasonably rough and lumpy, but three out of three, no PFD, is not a good look re: safety attitudes, and I fear this will eventually affect us as a community, maybe in terms of government regulation for all kayakers to wear PFD's, which is not bad in itself.
What is to be feared is a government regulation requiring licencing for all kayakers (in this the most over-governed country in the Western world). It would only take a few more kayak disasters that grab the media attention for this to happen.
See you all in a while
