Behold - the AKFF SCREENSAVER RSS FEED

Postby leftieant » Wed Aug 20, 2008 8:29 am

Good morning All

Firstly, thanks to Red for getting this one up and running, I am merely the mouthpiece typing out the instructions.

We are in the throes of building an AKFF screensaver, which for the technologically aware, is an RSS feed of photos that your computer can then use as your screensaver images. Red has been pretty clever, and is setting up the feed so that it automatically collects images from the Trip Reports, and includes them in the feed!

How do you go about setting this up? Windows XP users, some instructions are below. Vista instructions should be fairly similar. Any Linux and Mac users, if you figure out how to set this up, please let me know.

Firstly, you will need to download a program called "Google Screensaver" (available at http://pack.google.com/screensaver.html). Download and install the program.

Secondly, go to your Display Properties (Start => Control Panel => Display). Select the "Screen Saver" tab.

Thirdly, in the drop down box, select "Google Screensaver"

Image

The following screen will pop up. Tick the "Photo Feeds" box and press the "Configure" button

Image

In the top-most field, type in http://www.akff.net/extras/Screensaver.php, and press the "Add" button.

Image

This will put the "AKFF Photo RSS Feed" in the list of feeds, with a ticked box next to it. Press Done to take yourself back to the Display Properties screen. Check your screensaver settings, press OK, and you're away!

This is still under development, so if you find any bugs, please let Red or myself know.
Cheers

Ant

*EDIT* Original calc had error - reflexively converted hours to secs instead of mins */EDIT*

Let's run a few numbers on this:

- set your refresh rate at once per 10 sec
- assume average file size of 100kB
- PC turned on 3 hours per day, 30 days per month

You will be downloading 100,000 x 6 x 60 x 3 x 30 = 3,240,000,000 bytes per month, over 3GB

Unless the php script has some way of using cached pictures, you will want to set the refresh rate very carefully to avoid blowing your monthly download allowance on these pics

Interesting, not something I'd thought of.

I might run a trial - leave the screensaver running for a few hours / maybe overnight & see what the usage is. Internode are pretty good, I think I can break down the usage by time. That should tell the tale.

Just a quick couple of items:
* Photos come direct from the 'photo competition' forum. Any new images added there will become part of your screensaver automatically.
* At the moment, there's around 100 or so.
* The image screensaver caches images locally, so your likely monthly byte usage is probably around a 100 meg + a bit more for new images.

I'll be keeping an eye on it from a site perspective; if it's causing too much of a bandwidth drain, or CPU usage, I might have to pull it.

Any photos that are added to the photo competition thread, will automatically be added to the list. :)

Dont mean to whinge but why only the competition thread. there are so many fantastic photos that are online but not part of the competition that I would like to see.

IS there a reason why ?

Love the screensaver !

There are heaps of great photos, but the logic is that people will submit their best and brightest to the comp thread. That way we can automatically set the script to collect those photos, rather than having to manually troll all the posts and manually add photos.

Would be a nice thing to do, but unfortunately not feasible.
Cheers

Buggered if "I" can get the damn thing to work. Obviously I am doing something wrong but I'm damned if I know what it is.
