First catch with a lure

Postby keenkayaker » Thu Jun 21, 2012 1:58 pm

Well i fished the moored boats around lake macquarie yacht club yesterday and used a sp lure and got a nice legal bream, first for the yak and first using lures, pretty happy, so now to learn more on this lure fishing and kayak's, very different than boat fishing but very enjoyable floating around in a yak!

I reckon you could temp a bass with that lure, or even a flathead in the right depth of water. One thing I would do is remove the excess hardware, and probably get new hooks, they look a bit old. You should be able to tie your leader straight onto the split ring, the swivel and clip are only taking away from the 'natural' look of the lure.

You would think its impossible to catch a fish on a lure until you actually do it the first time. There's no looking back for you now, you'll love the convenience of just grabbing your gear and going at short notice compared to having to worry about bait. That been my experience at least.

Well done mate, the humble old Mister Twister, the first soft plastic I ever used way back in the early 90s.
Like Yakatak said troll that hard body so that its just hitting bottom every now and then and you should get a flatty or 2.
Someday I'll have money, money isn't easy come by, by the time its come by, I'll be gone!

I fish the area quite often. Try drifting out a little deeper around the orange racing markers, I have caught plenty of Flathead on SPs. Might catch you out there one day.

yeah i will give that a try ivangr8, hope we meet out there one day, i might be able to get a few pointers on lure fishing from you! ... will renew the hooks on the hb lure and try for a flathead drifting, i tried a few weeks ago in the belmont south bay out near the markers from the creek but it was still too shallow i thought in most of that bay area!.. so next time i'll get out a bit further towards the sailing marker bouys.

Is that in the first pic a Mr Twister? If so, that was my first softy also, albeit back in the early 90's and worked brilliantly on the flatties and a couple of other species as bycatch that i still couldnt identify. The soft plastic lures have certainly evolved over the years, though i'm still to decide if that's to catch more fish or fishermen...
cheers,
matt

if your like me and want to be able to change lures quickly you can still use a snap-swivel but get ones more appropriate to the line class and size of the lure. I use them all the time and normally catch plenty but they are way smaller than the one in your photo. they even come small enough to be able to use with dry flies... but I don't...

my first plastic catch was a flattie on a twin tail grub in a rather lurid pink but my first ever strike on a lure of any description came when I ran out of bait one day and cut an oval piece of plastic from an ice-cream tub, punched a hole in it and threaded the line through the hole followed by a bean sinker and a hook... That would have been over 40 years ago and I never went back to bait until I started kayak fishing a few years ago. I will use baits now as a backup plan...

floating about in the yak is a great way to spend some spare time.. very relaxing

cheers

Too true!! I tried using a snap swivel on a minnow type hb lure & it would helicopter on retrieve or it was on its side etc, was just totally wrong!! :?
The fish were having a wonderful day till I came along.

I remember my first lure catch! was a legal Bream on a cicada surface lure in Feb last year in a creek up near Morisset :D

You'll never forget your first lure catch it makes you want to use lures on every trip!
I was still using bait "just in case" but now it's just hb's & sp's!!

You then become a 'hunter' instead of a 'feeder'!!  You'll love the challenge that goes with it too!

Cheers mate! ;-)
