I'd be interested in what sailing the PA would be like, I don't think we have a report on that here yet. You have AMA's or do you think the PA is barge enough without them?

i dont have them on the outback and havent gone over yet ...if your careful and know a bit about sailing then really you should never go over unless your really pushing hard

Keeping the outback or at least the drive might be an idea if finances allow. That way any dramas with the drive and you will have a spare one to slot in, This was one of the things I was considering when it looked like my ski days might be at an end.

no problems money wise more like storage space

and im a little confused as to why you would have 2 drives .i understand if one stuffs up then you can use the other one but you wouldnt carry this with you everytime you go out would you? so why wouldnt you just get the broken one fixed ?
ive had the same mirage drive for 2 years and it has never even looked like having any problems

have other people had problems ? i havent read about any

What would you rather do ? paddle a pa or pedal it ?, its sort of along the lines of carrying a spare tyre for your car. Bear in mind this what was being discussed when the possibility of me ever picking up a paddle again looked a little dicey.

thats what i like to hear i used to sail hobie cats years and years ago also 14 and 16'ers cant wait to hit the outer reefs of newcastle

There have been a few reports of drive failures - some snapped cables which attach the drive chains to the hubs, and also of the adjustment holes in the hubs breaking. The latter is not too bad if you need to get home, as you can always use another adjustment setting, but the first type is catastrophic and you would have to paddle home. I know that the Outback is a pig to paddle; I imagine the PA is worse. A spare drive would fit easily in the front hatch of a PA - if you've got one anyway it would be worth carrying the spare. What do you reckon?

I'm not sure that there is a recommended replacement period, since it probably depends on how much mileage you've done. The reported breakages have been at the point where the cable attaches to the chain - the strands are visible at that point, so if you check the cables and see any broken strands there replace the cable immediately. There are actually 8 cable connections on a drive, so check them all carefully before you go out and you should be fine.

What Hobie do you have now, and how old is it? I believe that the really old drives used a thinner cable.

i have a 09 outback but the drive is an 07 model but have never had a problem with it at all and i know where the cables are visible and i do check mine but as i said never had a problem

yes it is a version 1 drive with a spline change so it works better with the 09 clipins
