New member in Christies Beach South Australia

Postby Meadows » Thu May 31, 2012 10:07 pm

Hi all,

I have had my scupper pro about 9 months now, and have gone out 5-6 times off Christies Beach and around the corner to Port Noarlunga. I'm loving the open water, and was lucky enough to be able to see some dolphins a few months back, it was awesome.

I have recently tried fishing from the Yak, try being the operative word. So far it fish 2, me 0.

I have ahadn'td reel and some dodgy squid jag from Kmart, but no love. What product should I chuck on the end of my line, the lures sound good as the idea of bait sound annoying.

Also what lure should I use if I start using a fishing rod? And how far out is best to go around this area? Plus what am I likely to catch ( told you I have no idea!)

I think I will be in shock once I actually catch something.

If anyone has any tips I'm all ears. And drop me a message if you are ever down this way, as it wld be great to get out on the water with someone.

Hi Greg, welcome :). A squid jig on a handline is a good thing to keep with you, I almost always have one out while I'm drifting or anchored. Try and keep it close to the bottom, and weedbeds are good places to find squid.

I've not yet yak fished down south, but I bet there's lots of salmon trout around, and they' aren't too fussed what lure you're using as long as it looks like a small baitfish. They tend to come in pretty close to shore; if you're going for a walk on your local jetty just after sunrise see how the old guys in close are doing. Take care with respect to the marine parks in your area, PIRSA have all the details.

I've been meaning to try noarlunga/southport; I'll send you a PM when I get around to it.

Hey Greg - welcome to the site. Perhaps if you want to try lure fishing, get a floating lures that perhaps dives to around 1-2m. The Duel Alie 70m mag minnows (floating) are a very good lure for fish like salmon and snook - a bit expensive at around $17 if you haven't spent much on tackle before, but they last - and because they float when you stop paddling, they don't get snagged. Drag one of those around as you paddle and you will eventually catch something. see http://www.rayannes.com.au/products/lur ... iet-70-90/

The other, cheaper option are the berkley frenzy lures - http://www.purefishing.com.au/baits/fre ... -hardbody/
Yoy can get these from BigW - also floating and diving to up to 3m. I like the red and white (qantas) one.

Good luck with your first catch.

Welcome Greg. Another good place to practice near you is of course the Onka, that way you don't have to worry about waves etc while you are concentrating on learning the art of fishing. Plenty of options in there. The lures solatree mentions will go fine in there with salmon trout & bream. There are also heaps of other fish that frequent the area such as mullet, flathead and mulloway. You might be surprised how far up river the fish go (I know I was) so paddle around and look for the deeper parts. Good luck!
Cheers

Actually Greg, i got 8 ;-) picked up the biggest trolling back, will put up a trip report tomorrow. I think i was almost as excited as you that you caught your first fish off of the yak, although you did try and lose it overboard again a few times!!! Well done, you will be hooked now!
Cheers
