'puter democracy

Postby salticrak » Tue May 15, 2012 2:31 am

With all the crap going on in Europe and the sleaze over here,I wonder if in the not too distant future we will do away with pollies altogether?Replacing them with a more direct democracy that allows the plebs to vote on issues via the net.Obviously there would have to be some sort of populist filter,or maybe not.Think about it, the trough would dramatically shrink.I wonder what the ministry would be called?

We vote the Pollies in (God help us) then they employ consultants cause the don't have a clue themselves!

I say we dispense with the Pollies and just employ the consultants ourselves. (with big penalty clauses)

While it would be great to see the end of politicians bulls**t I don't think this will happen in the foreseable future. So many pollies are useless but I would oppose it myself: direct democracy would be a nightmare. For starters, I dont think the average person on the street has anywhere near the intelligence to properly consider and make reasonable decisions on national issues, let alone global issues. To me, that's why we appoint people to gather the information and make the big decisions for us. Foreign policy would be a nightmare. Economic policy would be insane. I don't consider the average jo as well would have anywhere near the expertise required to be abreast of and give proper attention to basically any important issue, or to be able to seperate out their own needs from what would best suit the majority. I think there'd be all sorts of knee jerk, popularity based results. Guess it seems I have a low view of society! have an even lower view of alot of pollies :). Don't know where we go to make things better myself!

This sort of thing wouldn't work for the day to day running of the country but I would love to see something like this come in for matters of conscience. Governments are generally scared stiff of dealing with things like euthanasia, censorship, abortion, etc and generally go along with their personal religious beliefs when they do.

These types of issues have nothing to do with government and should be up to the populace to decide rather than a small number of insulated twits who are terrified of upsetting the minorities.

ouch, awful except as cheaterpants says maybe useful for some input around euthenasia etc.

we need strong leaders who have shown competance and risen thru the ranks.

interesting that retired generals seem to be in demand when the government need something done.

interesting model the army. really yo cant get parachuted into a position as a sargeant, you have to excel as a private and then a corporal.

similarly by the time you worked your way up from leftenant (moderator :) ) to general you would have probably had to show competance, teamwork and an ability to work hard.

certainly colonel attaturk who defeated the aussies at gallipolli and later went onto become the founder of modern turkey is still revered in that country. say a bad word about him and they'd probably stone you.

eisenhower, dont know if he was any good or not.

some may even say general sadam hussein ran a country with a first class education and health system and allowed women to participate in the most secular society in the middle east. now democracy has given them civil war, no running water, no electricity, and a pile of rubble. sometimes it just takes a strong leader.

general putin has rocketed russia back from oblivion and looks like he may rule for another 8 years.

anyway, no, you shouldnt let the punters have a say. can you imagine an army letting its privates have a vote on whether they should attack at dawn. a debacle at achieving anything.

good to see ex army engineer ( and tunneller) campbell newman hit the ground running and scrapping the committee system of government. better than hitting the ground enquiring as julia and wayne have. swanny is improving

swanny did put in a good performance on the weekend with 36 touches against the lions and must be favourite for the brownlow now.

i like a good dictator, i'm going to see him tomorrow nite and am sure he will be even better than borat or bruno

I suspect this mob http://front.moveon.org/ are just like Getup here, but it's interesting to see how they deal with it in other countries. It seems Romney has upset more than a few people on the left of politics in the US.

I see in Greece now they are considering another technocratic gov.In the U.S. the situation has got out of hand with the powerful lobby groups holding the pollies by the short and curlies, large corporations are recognized as a ''person'' giving them the right to chuck more money into the trough, surely there is better way,or have people become complacent and the real politics of the day revovles around gay marriage/and who is the better economic manager. There seems to be no leadership with a vision for the future and for the betterment of people as a whole, maybe we are too comfortable now.
