The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Marukami and Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey. I tried to get into The Finkler Question but like many Booker winners, I found it dull. Might need to apply myself more. I have a month off on the sunny coast coming up, and plowing through a massive back-log of recommendations and gifts is high on the agenda (when I'm not fishing).

Gravedig alert...

I read Christos Tsiolkas' The Slap this week, in preparation for the TV adaptation. Terrific read from the first page, and a fine depiction of suburban middle aged angst. I'd have slapped the little prick for sure, and it would have made both of us better people  . The TV adapt is well worth a look, nice to see some money spent on Australian drama.

Also reading a book of macabre fishing mystery short stories called Dead Fishy by Derek Hanson. Set in Australia, there are some clever stories (and a few that fell flat for me). Overall, a good read.

Kiln people; David Brinn.

Bit of a fill-in book, but I enjoyed it more than I expected to.
Detective mystery set in a world of limited-lifespan pseudo-clones that can reupload memories of their day back into the source human to achieve a sort of consiousness continuation.

I just finished an excellent book that proved hard to put down:

"Apache" by Ed Macy.

A great read about British Apache gunship helicpoter pilots in Afghanistan.

Cheers.

Thanks for the heads up... going to have to check it out on iView - enjoyed reading the book a couple years back. Not reading much worth writing home about currently, bring on the holidays!

Read a couple of rock n roll autobiographies recently, just to remind me how beige my life really is....

1st - I am Ozzy.
The main problem with this book is that you can hear Ozzy reading it to you. Funny at first, then gradually more and more irritating. The dude is also pretty f'ked up, as we all know, so the way its written seems a bit childish, which is not what your expecting from the 'prince of .... darkness sharon'.
Some funny stories, a bit of interesting background info, but pretty much a let down. In fact, I'd suggest that you buy it if you have a cat, or very small and pathetic dog like Krayley's, that cant be house trained, and does little poos all over the house, it would make a great alternative to having a toilet roll on the coffee table.

2nd - Scar Tissue
Anthony Keidisn (Red Hot Chilli Peppers front man).
Dudes.......if you aren't easily offended by just about anything regarding sex, drugs and rock n' roll, this is one bitchin' read. After having read it, my first thought was 'Thanks for not dying man when you probably should have - I really appreciate having got an insight into that insane life you've lead'. Its a very, very full on read, but geez it was a good one - he's a really interesting dude, bit of a tripper, but still cool. Worth reading.

3rd - Slash
Half way through this one - so far, so good. Still prefer Scar Tissue though.

Greg

The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. Can't believe I left this in the bookshelf so long.

'LIFE without LIMITS' by David Pescud

He's the dyslexic sailor who started 'Sailors with disAbilities.' This organisation teaches disabled people to sail, giving them an interest they would never have had.

David has sailed with his motly crew of limbless and otherwise disabled sailors in many Sydney to Hobart races, including the ill-fated one in 1998.
