Does anyone else need a lift somewhere ?

Postby keza » Mon Apr 30, 2012 1:21 pm

I now have both my kids on crutches, is that a record ? can I win something ?
My daughter whinged about her foot since January but seeing as it was on the back of a list of things caused by jumping off bridges, climbing rocks etc etc, we told her to suck it up or slow down a bit.
So she kept dancing on it and playing touch. Turns out ($1000 worth of specialist, MRI's, Xrays, physio, crutch and boot hirer) that she does have a broken bone in her foot. Whoops
Now my son has Severs disease, which is when the bone grows faster than the tendons. After 5 hours at the hospital yesterday, he is also on crutches and we are just starting with the physios and specialists etc.

I guess I'm on dishes then.

Still at the physio, 3 of them have looked now and none have seen anything like it, so off to the specialist tomorrow.
This is the same specialist that both my wife and daughter are seeing. Do you think he's trying to steal my family or just my money ?
Not much sympathy or going downhappening around my place.

daughter sounds like that mite be a stress fracture , regardless kids fractures heal at twice the rate of adult fractures and shouldnt keep her down for long.

really the problem with feet in active kids s that they get back into weight bearing a little early and stir it up.
swimming is good.

severs and osgood schlaters are very very common and often at the start of the footy season when hard boots causes increased stresses at the back of the ankle (achilles/severs) or bottom of the quads (thru the patella tendon into the top of the tibia as patella traction/osgoods).

they are traction injuries , in that the muscle overpowers the rope which is attached to the bone and the rope / tendon starts to split little fragements of bone away causing a lump which can be very very painful and keep kids awake at night.

the good news is that severs and osgood are nearly always self limiting and settle very well if you just rest them and then do stretches to correct the imbalance between bone length and hamstring/quads /calf muscle strength.

girls because they have wider hips and more angle at the knee tend to get less osgood and more of a condition called chondromalacia patella. very common in netballers due to suddnely slamming on the brakes and the muscle drags the patella over the knee in a zig zag course.

severs can sometimes be helped from recuring by sticking innersoles in footy boots ( i forget whether on the inside or the outside).

you see a lot of sportspeople wearing the patella bands to try and hold the patella in place and prevent some of the traction injuries but very hard for something to overpower the leg muscles

just watch crutches and get them at the right height as a lot of people get damaged a problem with injury to their armpit nerves and subsequent pain from weight bearing on the axilla.

Snap. To quote my GP (who has literally saved my life three times), it's a syndrome that's so common, it could be regarded as a normal part of adolescent development. Her advice was, if it hurts, stop it, but if you don't, no lasting damage will result. My daughter is planning to use it as an excuse for evading the cross country tomorrow.

I love you Dr Lao, but I'll settle for you continuing to send me to emergency as required (and assisting my daughter to evade running).

These guys said in 20 years they haven't seen severs this acute. His ankle is really swollen and red and very painful.
Seems a bit like when I had gout in my toe but in the ankle.
They treated him for nearly 3 hours and put an emergency request in to the specialist in case it's an infection of some sort.
He had the flu last week with fevers etc so who knows.

We have a friend whose daughter has it in the knee and both ankles, she is a top athlete for her age but seems to manage it with physio, stretches, orthotics etc.
I seem to remember stuff like this when I was a kid but they didn't have names for it then..... sore ankle, sore knee etc
Cause was usually ..... you must have knocked it.

There's always a big spike in these kinds of conditions about a month after soccer/footy goes back.
To do with increased activity and poorly designed footy/soccer boots.

think this one was netball induced, but you are right - we made it thru three games.
