Inspired by Carnster and Ant's tales of hoo I decided to head South and wet a line on the Southern Gold Coast.
Whilst inspired, I was far from prepared!
With a handle of 'polylureosis' I am more at home dragging around lumps of plastic than a livey.
However when a small macktuna jumped aboard a I thought I should give it a go.
Hmmmm - What do I have in the tackle box.
5/0 Worm hook, 10cm wire trace, spare treble.
What would McGyver do?
Unclip lure, place 5/0 worm hook on snap, place 10cm trace on snap, attach treble to end of trace. Hey presto - livey rig!
.......
Well that took a while and by the time I nosed hooked the tuna and pinned the treble up near the dorsal fin poor tuna wasn't swimming to well - but tracked straight so out he went.
I commenced a slow troll............
I heard it before I felt it - I turned around to see a massive splash 25 meters stern, the rod suddenly bent towards the water, a that sweet sound of line against drag came screeching from the reel.
Before long, braid that hadn't see sunlight in a few years, was disappearing at a rapid
pace. I soon realised this was no ordinary fish.I gained a little line, lost a lot, gained, lost - you get the idea
But soonish had a glimpse of a long, dark, striped .... mackerel.
If the heart rate wasn't up already - now it was. As a Spanish Yak Virgin this was a special day.
However! how do I land (yak) it?
Tuna have done before (they don't have teeth), Snapper net (this was too big), gaff (I knew I had it attached to the kayak for a reason. Easy to forget when you never need it)
Ready the gaff, fish is now getting tired, starting to turn on its side, first left (away from the yak), now right (towards the yak) OH NO - that puts the 25lb fluro right between it's razor sharp teeth - SNIP
As the fish glides past, down, under - I lunge forward arm up to armpit in water and grab the tail wrist. I think to myself 1 kick and it's over - But the fish is spent as I haul the beast onto my lap

20lb braid, 25lb Fluro leader
Cut in 3 it fitted in the esky
The esky lid stays on when upside down (don't ask how I know - but avoid Currubmbin bar on small tides and 2ft swell)
Don't try and hold your kayak as a wave tries to take it towards the beach
It's quite easy to flip the outback, whilst treading water, with a 20kg esky on the back.
