i have an old trangia stove which works on the same priciple. it packs up into about 200W X 100D mm in size and it has its own little kettle, enough for a cuppa. i use it when overnighters down creeks with mates. cook some of thos noodle bowl things for breakfast, lunch and tea!

as jim (and others) said previously, don't light it on board the yak because you might end up with a lapful of molten plastic!!

oh that wouldnt tickle!

Hey AdventureLover - I have one of those - bought it 25 years ago to use as a fondue!! Still got it but haven't used it for years!

All those little bbqs are terrific!! How inventive are some people??

I go camping a fair bit in my Campervan & when 'bushing it' I use my 'gas bottle' bbq ......

bottle bbq .jpg

This was my "Mark 1" version - I have since upgraded it to a 10kg BBQ bottle & now have 2 the same size! They work terrifically for bbqing meat & stuff - just put an oven rack on top. You can cook your veges wrapped in foil & then cook meat on top.

WARNING! EXTREME CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN MAKING THESE! GAS BOTTLES REQUIRE THE GAS TAP TO BE REMOVED & FILLED WITH SOAPY WATER OVER 2 WEEKS, CHANGED OFTEN, THEN ONLY CUT WHEN FULL OF WATER!

We also have a smaller version of the Kiwi Thermette, purely for boiling water (or roasting marshmallows....)

Fill it up with water, Just put twigs in the centre hole & the water is cooked in less than 5 mins. The water is contained in a sleeve around the edge of the fire. Beaut little invention!

nice copper one - will last for decades

Cheerio

G'day Baldy

I got mine from Mo Tackle at Coffs, but I don't think they sell them any more. Haven't seen any in the cattle dog for a while - it is a smaller version & is not copper - just galvanised! If I was in NZ, I'd get the copper one & bring it back with me! They last forever. Someone else also makes them over there (even bigger) & with a different name. They are often sold in Disposal (Army gear) shops over there.

I saw it in Queenstown.

I have seen a similar version at the Caravan & Camping show in Sydney, but it ran on metho (tho I assume you can use twigs) & was also quite expensive. Mine was about $30.

There is another one caller a Kelly Kettle but it is 60 Quid in UK!

Check this out for a heating contest (about 1/2 way thru).

Check out the Jon Spink boiling water & one of his vids also show cooking with the base - the bases are very stable.

Cheers

Am impressed with the thought that has gone into the can stove.

Being an old touring cyclist I still have my Trangia which is handy in winter but being a bit lazy like the thermos :D

Sorry didn't let Baldy know in my previous post that a similar burner to Arpie's is sold in Australian Geographic stores.

Thanks for that Arpie and Flyrod as the weather cools off I'll be getting one of those and I think a copper one would be worth the price, just because it will last so long and the natural anti-bacterial ability of it for holding water.

Ive been looking online at them and the new ones come with attachments for cooking, either with just the base unit without the container or on top of the container itself when the water is boiling, they reckon its good for something quick like frying some eggs while the water boils.[about 5mins to boil 2litres]

Might be a bit more hassle and bulky but I'd put up with that just to not have the smell of a fuel burner, I cant stand it......give me stinky ol woodsmoke anyday :D

Cheers
