Where to buy 12v SLA battery charger?

Postby qiaoqq » Mon Apr 23, 2012 10:07 pm

Just wondering where does people buy their SLA battery and charger from? Dick smith sells $40 for battery and $50 for charger, is this over-priced?

Find a Jaycar store and get a suitable SLA Charger for around $35. The batteries vary in price depending on capacity.

Try Jaycar instead: http://jaycar.com.au/productResults.asp ... orm=CAT2#3
I have one of the $25 chargers along with one of their 12V batteries for I think about the same and it runs my lowrance X4 for several hours with the backlight on and all the live long day with it off

Overpriced? Yes it is, as the boys say, Jaycar seems to be the cheapest provider for the battery at around $26 for the 12v 7Ah unit. I would consider the 4 Ah battery if you are only powering the sounder alone (weighs less/smaller).

As for a charger, its a 12v lead acid battery, so any charger which can sense (and adjust to) battery charge. That means any of the better car chargers which are available from Supercheap or Autopro, and of course, Jaycar.
Cheers

Got my 12c 7ah (I agree with above poster - could / should have got smaller) SLA online for $19 delivered and a suitable charger from Jaycar for $25ish.

Whilst this is a true statement, it is fraught with danger to charge a SEALED lead acid battery with a standard, say, car charger - even a 1 amp one which most of the cheap ones at the SCA or KMart or wherever are not. Unless you want the battery to look like a football if you don't watch it close enough. The adjusting sensors that Artie mentions are often 4 amp chargers that lower to 1 amp with they sense the battery is charged but if that battery cannot vent then woompa - football time. Who wants to sit there watching it all the time?

A proper SLA Charger cannot overcharge the battery and has an indicator to tell you when its good to go. SImple as that.

You could also do a search of the forum for the exhaustive number of posts saying this exact same thing. Not just my words.
