Yak fishing car suggestions

Postby kraley » Sat Jul 21, 2012 4:13 pm

I have been officially banned by my family from using our new car for kayak fishing excursions. They dont like the sand and smelly gear.

I dont really drive in my daily life so i am pondering buying a vehicle to keep the yak on full time.

I was thinking about an old station wagon. Lots of storage, can hold the kid and wife if need be - an easy to get my outback on and off.

I dont need 4wd - i mainly fish round the harbour.

This car will be driven at most once a week for around 10-20 kms.

Brains trust - just how cheap can i go here? I see lots of late '90's cars or around $5k.

Have a hunt around for one of the first gen Foresters (the 2 litre version). I have heard of these coming in down around that number.

Regardless, $5 to $6k should get you something unassuming and reliable.

Ken,

If it was me and I didn't need another car (with all the associated costs and the parking requirements) I'de invest in a trailer. A fold away one if you don't have suitable extra parking, or if you have the room I'de opt for a plain old vanilla box trailer. $2,000 would see you clear with rego, easy load racks, and a storage box for the accessories/fishing gear me thinks. And if you ever do any travelling on holidays it would be perfect for the kids toys and bikes and camping gear as well.

Bit of a left field suggestion but how longs the outback? Would it fit in something like this?

2002 TOYOTA HIACE SBV 02 VAN LONG REGO 9-10 MONTHS REGO SLIGHT DAMAGE

http://bit.ly/LzgmWL

One of the best setups I saw was the hobie van @ the Marlo abt the other year, had 2 Pa's in it from memory. Could be used as a handy camping setup too I guess.

Otherwise, I'd be going a commodore wagon just for the sheer number of them around, availability of parts etc.

HX ute.

Low enough to be an easy load, bench seat for three, an icon of aussie motoring, cheap and easy to maintain and actually might increase in value.

At the risk of ignoring the thread title and siding with Occy, I am a trailer supporter. Im in a similar situation in that we have one car and the wife forbids the carrying of the yak on the car. However my car is an SUV (ford territory) and I have kitted it out with some good quality seat covers etc.... Works for me and saves me on running and fuel costs too.

You should check out Squidders salubrious Ford Station Wagon which is the ultimate Yak carrying, Rod stowing, don't care if I mess it limmmmooouuussine. It's Gas powered (only) I think and therefore he fills it once every 10 years and it cost 20c to fill. Last time he did back in 1991.

I hear say that the Army considered replicating its suspension for the next generation of cross country vehicles, cunningly disguised as a White family wagon.

Many stand in absolute awe as he cruises by with all those bikini clad babes chasing him. It has cool "Top Water Freak" stickers too.

Gotta be worth .... Ummmm .... A million .... but I reckon you could get one for 12 hunge at an Auction.

Your right Mark, I did kinda ignore the thread title didn't I. So if it has to be a motor vehicle how about something like Murd had. A 20 year old beaten up old buzz box of some sort. A Daihatsu Charade or something equally as ridiculous wasn't it. He took that bloody little thing everywhere, over the roughest tracks and through the wildest rivers this country has to offer. Attacked by viscous water buffalo, kamakazi kangaroo's, and emotional emu, not to mention those killer crocs. And it never missed a beat if I'm not mistaken. ;-)

falcon station wagon.
You could probably slide the outback inside if you drop the front passenger seat down......and with the 2 grand left over you'll be able to afford the carbon tax. ;-)

Absolutely. Consider the 5k well spent on a Hilux or similar ute (2wd), possibly a twin cab. So many advantages.
1. It's a ute
2. Your family can fit, but they wont like the smell so wont come with you anyway. But you've done your duty.
3. It's a ute. You can go camping, do watersports, have fun with friends. Just like a tampon.
4. Easy to load.
5. It's a ute. You can buy a Lee Kernaghan cassette and some boots and immediately you are "country"
6. You can cart shit places.

Best option ever. Old Commodores suck arse, old Falcons suck more arse. Higher rego, shit loads of fuel, more socially unacceptable than genital warts. Might as well find one of those crap chinese sofa-beds and decorate it with "my family" stickers.
