Heavy spin outfit help

Postby proangler » Mon Feb 08, 2010 4:30 pm

Hello everyone,

I need to by a good new heavy spin outfit as my current rod is falling apart and the reel is also starting go. I will use the outfit for mainly bait and trolling lures offshore.

I was thinking of maybe a 8000 size reel paired on a 10-15kg rod.

My price limit is about $600

Thanks for your help

Cheers James

The big Penns have a reputation for being bullet proof bits of gear although notas fancy as other brands. I don't own one but know you'd have enough change for a fancy schmancy rod to put it on.

If you want something cutting edge with all the bells and whistle you might want to look elsewhere though, they're very rugged but are basic when it comes to features.

For Rods..... Take a look at these,

http://motackle.com.au/index.cfm?pr=product&product_id=510
Kink Mac spin or Bluewater spin.

I like these as they are two piece which means they can be stored inside many yaks for surf entries/exits.

If your not planning on casting with it a Jig rod is a great option.

Second quote for a Penn Spinfisher 750/850/950 or the slighly more expensive but smoother and better Penn Slammer, also worth a look is the Penn Conquer or the Fin Nor brand (both new to australia), big drag available on the Fin Nors, the Conquer you can use braid straight on the reel without backing (expensive though) and easy to service.

I also have a Daiwa Sealine Bull which is like a slammer, simple, strong and robust but smoother than a Spinfisher and more drag available.

All fo these are under $300 leaving a better scope for the rod, not much opinion there as waiting for my 50-100 buck rods to break (Penn Rods of course) and haven't researched this too much. I find reels die a magnitude quicker than rods (unless dropped over the side and lost or stepped on).
Yak PBs Kingfish 66 cm (finally on 7/5/10!), Samson Fish 58cm, Snapper 37cm, Bonito 48cm, Squid 25cm hood, Salmon 67cm, Tailor 50 cm, Leatherjacket 35cm, Yakka 34cm, Flathead 25 cm released others hopefully to come

Yes! At this point I've used the Salina II every trip since October 09 and apart from 2 x non stainless bearings (in the easily accessible spool assembly) it's been a really good reel for use on the yak.

After landing a bronzie about 70kg as well as a couple of 8kg kings, mack tuna and those barra to 118cm, you can be pretty confident about the strength of this reel. As a trolling reel it is excellent because of its powerful gearing. As a casting reel for SP's I'd prefer something with higher gearing but that's a matter of personal choice. This reel is loaded with 30lb braid. What I like best about this reel is the locking mechanism for the handle assembly and gear tolerances under heavy loads. You never feel like there's any slip in the gears or movement in the handle when winding in big fish.

In terms of maintenance, it's an easy breakdown and parts don't go whizzing off in all directions when you undo a random screw. The internal handle and drive bearings are all stainless (phew...) and the drive gears and pinion are good quality. On full immersion saltwater penetrates pretty easily so this is one reel that requires regular and thorough user maintenance. The only hard thing in reassembly is properly lining up the 2 x red dots on the cam gear and drive gear. All in all though, this is a super easy reel to strip down and put back.

Be prepared to check the drag assembly frequently and lube those 2 x (ridiculous) steel bearings as required to ensure they don't rust. (I'm sure Okuma will address this issue - maybe they don't know they're not stainless yet). Oh yeah, the Salina II's dual drag system is brilliant. In fact it's a whole lot smoother and stronger than my Saragosa.

This reel would be nicely suited to that Crystal Powertip Diabolical mentioned.
Cheers,
Dan

Penn Spinfisher 850ssm on a Fin Nor Ahab 30 to 50lb graphite rod. Total cost $320 leaves lots of money for about 400m of 50lb braid :)

Just bought a Daiwa Saltist 4500 and a Shimano Jigwrex PE4 rod as a trolling/jigging combo and it seems pretty good. Looking at about $620 all up plus braid. I haven't caught anything worthy yet mind you.

Thanks for all the relpies everyone.

Just on those nitro vipers, is it worth spending $300+ on it? They are going to get a bit of a workout with surf launches so will they last?

Thanks again
cheers James

Nitro are the only brand that will replace a rod section for $60... no matter how you broke it, no questions asked. The Viper is a 2 piece so will break and fit inside most yak hulls. I always ship my rods in and out of the surf zone. Teamed with a Saltist 4500 you have an awesome weapon for casting, plastics etc. The reel would also work well on the next model up (Godzilla)... awesome rod too.
